Abbott’s recalled baby formula | Cronobacter and Salmonella Investigation
In February 2022, Abbott Laboratories announced that it was recalling some of its Similac, Alimentum and EleCare baby formula products that were manufactured at the company’s plant in Sturgis, Michigan.
Abbott issued the recall in response to a report by the FDA linking powdered baby formula produced in Abbott’s Sturgis facility to the death of two infants and †he hospitalization of four infants. According to the report, “Cronobacter infection may have contributed to the cause of death for both patients.” The FDA also reported one case of Salmonella Newport linked to the same facility.
To date, several lawsuits have been filed against Abbott by parents of infants who reportedly contracted Cronobacter or Salmonella infection from tainted baby formula.

Abbott’s recalled baby formula | The dangers of Cronobacter and Salmonella
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) alerts that Cronobacter infections “can be deadly in newborns. Infections in infants usually occur in the first days or weeks of life.”
Symptoms include:
- Fever
- Poor feeding
- Excessive crying
- Very low energy
- (Some infants may also have) Seizures.
The CDC urges everyone to “take an infant with these symptoms to a medical provider as soon as possible,” and lists the infants who are at risk to get sick:
- Infants 2 months and younger. These infants are most likely to develop meningitis if they get sick from Cronobacter.
- Infants born prematurely.
- Infants with weakened immune systems. Babies with this condition can’t fight germs as well because of illness or medical treatment, such as chemotherapy for cancer.
Salmonella is responsible for more than 1 million infections every year in the US. 420 cases of salmonella end up in death, according to data from the CDC. Symptoms include “diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps” and “usually begin 6 hours to 6 days after infection.”
