Invokana Lawsuit Allegations, Claims & Injuries
The Type-2 diabetes drug Invokana (canagliflozin) was initially approved by the FDA in early 2013; it was the first SGLT2 inhibitor approve by the FDA to treat Type-2 diabetes. According to the FDA, “SGLT2 inhibitors are a class of prescription medicines that are FDA-approved for use with diet and exercise to lower blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes.” Additionally, related medication called Invokamet (canagliflozin and metformin) was received initial approval in 2014. In short, Invokana, Invokamet, and other SGLT2 inhibitors are supposed to work by preventing the absorption of glucose (sugar) by the kidneys, which should then allow the body to pass the glucose out of the body through urination.
However, in December of 2015, the FDA announced that the labels for Invokana and other SGLT2 inhibitors needed to be updated with specific information and warning about Diabetic Ketoacidosis, better known as DKA. DKA is a serious condition that can lead to Diabetic Coma or even Death. Since, Invokana, Invokamet, and other SGLT2 inhibitors were ordered to update their labels again in June of 2016. These label updates were based on more than 100 reports of Acute Kidney Injury.
