Sexual Abuse & Sexual Assault Claims | The Thacher School

Sexual Abuse & Sexual Assault at The Thacher School

In June 2021, the “Report of the Board of Trustees of The Thacher School” revealed  “in graphic detail allegations of sexual abuse and harassment by faculty and staff toward students over the span of four decades.” (Los Angeles Times). The report, a response from the Board to “to allegations of sexual misconduct and harassment involving Thacher alumni, current students, faculty, and staff”, also revealed that “certain School policies, practices, and social and cultural constraints [were] a barrier to the reporting of student-on-student sexual misconduct.”

Schools like The Thacher School have the legal obligation to keep students, staff, faculty, and visitors safe on their campuses. If they fail to do so, or don’t offer proper support in instances of reported sexual abuses and/or sexual assaults, they have to be held accountable. Sexual Abuse at The Thacher School | What Happened?

According to the Los Angeles Times, “Thacher is an insular, rarefied school steeped in tradition, from vespers at the outdoor chapel overlooking the vistas of Ojai, to camping trips around California’s Central Coast. Students form tight bonds with faculty and administrators and sometimes visit their homes for tutoring or a chance to bake cookies.”

In 2020, a student launched the instagram account @rpecultureatthache, and “helped by alumni — posted excerpts, often with a trigger warning for the content that followed. The current and former head of school were tagged in nearly every post.”

The Board of Trustees, weeks after the launch of the instagram account, decided to hire the company that eventually put together the report that revealed the 4 decades of sexual abuse.

According to The New York Times,

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office received a copy of the report from the school […], and investigators are reviewing the allegations, Capt. Eric Buschow, a spokesman for the department, said. […]

The report named six former faculty members, including an English teacher who it said sexually assaulted a 16-year-old sophomore just before she went on a camping trip at the start of the school year.

Yes. Please call us or use our contact form to request a Free Case Evaluation. We have a national team of attorneys and staff who look forward to speaking with you.

Typically, we represent clients on contingency fee agreements. If we take your case under a contingency fee arrangement, you won’t owe our firm any legal fees unless we are able to recover money for you.

Our contingency fee agreements are usually based on a percentage of the amount we recover for our clients. The contingency fee amount is determined by the type of case, our estimate of how long it will take to resolve your case, and our estimate of the litigation costs we will advance in your case. Each engagement agreement includes the details of the fee arrangement. Questions about our fee agreements are welcomed and encouraged.

In most litigation matters, it is extremely difficult – practically impossible – to predict how long it will take to resolve a particular case. Every case is different, and we will do our best to provide you with an estimate based on your case and our experience with similar cases. Moreover, we will do our best to keep you updated and manage expectations along the way.
